Which whiteboard do I need?
A computer is normally controlled by a mouse but you can touch the interactive whiteboard to control the mouse cursor instead.  More information. Boards are available in the following technologies:

Finger touch (resistive) you touch the board to control the mouse and draw with your finger. Membrane surface, ideal for primary children. A school that uses a manufacturers finger and also pen boards will only have to learn one set of software, for instance CleverBoard and CleverTouch.  Comparison chart.

Special pen (electromagnetic), ideal for children who are used to writing with a pen, secondary education, colleges, universities and businesses for training or in conjunction with video conferencing over the Internet. Hard surface boards that are less likely to damage.  Comparison chart

Integral whiteboards SMART (finger touch) and Promethean (pen) have both brought out all-in-one boards that come on a wall frame with a built-in boom and projector and sound.  Comparison chart. 
 
Other whiteboard technologies
Some manufacturers produce a whiteboard which uses the mimio or eBeam technology, either incorporated into the board or attached to the side of the board. Whiteboards.

Portable whiteboard systems such as eBeam and mimio are ideal for on-the-road teachers and presenters.  A laptop, portable projector and portable eBeam or mimio and you have interactivity, which means you can discuss and annotate documents with out-of-school or out-of-office colleagues or clients.
 
Copyboards
Copyboards are used with a laptop or PC and can be used without a projector. UK market leader for copyboards is Panasonic who make Panaboard copyboards.  Other manufacturers that make copyboards are 3M and PLUS.  Copyboards.
 
Rear projection interactive whiteboards
Interactive whiteboards designed for rear projection have an advantage that the presenter or teacher can stand in front of the whiteboard without casting shadows.  These systems are normally more expensive than front projection whiteboards. SMARTBoard make rear projection interactive whiteboards.
 
Interactive panels, wireless tablets and pads
Some manufacturers simply produce whiteboards, others offer interactive products that complement their whiteboards.  Interactive panels allow you to face the audience and see what you are writing for example at a desk or lectern. Panels are  ideal for doctors and paramedics to discuss notes with patients, police and  also emergency service on-the-road use.   Wireless tablets are ideal for teachers and presenters who like to move around the room; USB pads can be used for lesson preparation freeing up the whiteboard for lessons in the classroom.  Interactive products.
 
Interactive voting systems
Voting systems or personal response systems as they are also known, have the advantage of keeping track of class attendance, cutting down truancy and freeing teachers from marking, whilst adding fun and interactivity into lessons and mock exams.  Each pupil or student answers questions through an infrared or radio frequency handset, and the receiver collates, marks and assesses results instantly.   Comparison chart.
 

Plasma touch screens
Plasma screens can become interactive with the use of a plasma screen overlay. You will have the cost of the plasma and the overlay, which needs to be measured against the cost of  interactive whiteboards with an average size of 77-inch and a projector.
